Today's Tip: How to Cut a Pomegranate

With the holiday season here, and pomegranates now hitting the grocery stores, I thought it appropriate to dedicate a post to how to cut these darn things and get the seeds out.

First, put on an apron, and make sure you aren't near anything you can't risk getting stained. This is a fairly non-messy method, but you never want to take a chance with something that stains. Now, with your knife, cutting board, and pomegranate, slice off the stop like this:

This is what it looks like after the top is off.  The seeds are actually separated into 6 different pods here, can you see the natural divisions?

With your knife, cut along these natural division lines, all the way down the side of the pomegranate.

When you are done, it should be able to flower open like this:

Fill a medium sized bowl with water, and remove the seeds from each of the sections, letting them drop into the water.  Don't worry about removing all of the white membrane, this is what the water is for.

All of the seeds sink to the bottom, and all of the white membrane floats to the top!

Use a spoon to remove all of the white membrane so all you have left is a bowl full of water and pomegranates.

Drain the water out so all you have left are the pomegranate seeds! Yum!
